19 people arrested in southern California gambling operation

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) – Police have arrested 19 people on charges of being involved in an illegal gambling operation at a Southern California home, officials said.

Neighbors complained to police and officers served a search warrant at the Garden Grove residence on Wednesday evening, the Orange County Register reported.

Police seized a dozen slot machine consoles and a handgun, Garden Grove Police Sgt. said Troy Haller.

The city typically sees 10 to 15 gambling operations per year, Haller said.

“A common theme in these places is the use of illegal drugs such as methamphetamine,” he told the newspaper. “In addition, they generally use criminal street gangs for security because of the amount of cash that flows through these businesses. “

Haller said people who play the machines are typically arrested on suspicion of illegal gambling violation, while those running the operation could face felony charges. Some of those arrested on Wednesday were also subject to outstanding arrest warrants, he said.

Once the machines are seized, they are kept as evidence and ultimately destroyed, Haller said.
