Entain-MGM Resorts International product announced Thursday that its sports betting mobile app is live in the District of Columbia. Per DC’s sports betting law, the app is only available within a two-block radius of the National Park.

Later this year, a BetMGM plans to open a stadium-connected retail bookmaker.

The BetMGM mobile app will allow our fans to get involved in the game in new and exciting ways, while the BetMGM connected bookmaker at Nationals Park will provide Nationals fans and the DC community with a first-class gathering place to celebrate. their passion for the sport, ”Alan Gottlieb, COO of Nationals owner Lerner Sports Group said in a statement.

Nationals Park isn’t the only MLB team to focus on sports betting. In Illinois, the Chicago Cubs have announced a plan for DraftKings to operate a bookie at or near Wrigley Field. Additionally, the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians, Ohio’s MLB franchises, are among the professional sports teams that are lobbying state lawmakers for licenses.

The BetMGM says the app is out-of-the-box and the book’s website lists DC as a Marketplace. However, the DC Lottery, which allows sports betting, has yet to update its page to show this approval.

William Hill Trouncing Gambet in DC

In the District of Columbia, sports betting is managed by the DC Lottery. They have a contract with Intralot to offer online betting across Washington, through an app called GambetDC.

In addition, DC officials also allow local establishments to hold licenses. These licenses allow in-person and limited online sports betting. Sports arenas, like Nationals Park and Capital One Arena, are allowed to receive Type A licenses, while bars and restaurants can apply for Type B licenses.

Last summer, William Hill began operating a retail bookie at Capital One Arena for Monumental Sports, which owns the Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals. It received approval in December to offer its mobile app.

Like the Nationals-BetMGM arrangement, the William Hill app is available for use only within a two-block radius of the arena.

Despite the marked territorial advantage that GambetDC has over William Hill, it is the latter who is the big winner so far, according to lottery office records.

In April – the most recent month for which recordings for both are available – William Hill had more bettors and much better fluency. William Hill reported 100,955 bets against 87,085 for GambetDC. However, William Hill cashed in $ 8 million on those bets, compared to GambetDC’s $ 2.7 million.

William Hill’s gross gaming revenue of $ 1.6 million was about three times the GambetDC’s $ 535,772.

Aside from the fact that arenas attract sports fans who are more likely to bet on events, critics of DC’s sports betting operations have noted that GambetDC takes more juice or offers lines that pay less than other sports betting. .

BetMGM completes its presence in Metroplex

For BetMGM, accessing the nation’s capital is the last room to be completely covered in the Washington metroplex, also known as DMV (DC-Maryland-Virginia).

In January, the sports betting mobile app launched in Virginia. BetMGM will also have a presence in Maryland, where voters approved sports betting last year. Officials expect it to be deployed later this year.

MGM Resorts operates the MGM National Harbor Casino in Oxon Hill, located just outside of DC.

“This becomes the first of many offerings we are developing to seamlessly connect sports and entertainment across the DMV, providing fans with unique opportunities to interact with our world-class resort and casino,” said the president and MGM National Harbor CEO Jorge Perez in a statement. .
