TRENTON – It is increasingly likely that voters will be asked in November to expand sports betting to include college games played in New Jersey or involving state schools.
The Senate reacted swiftly to the idea shortly after its introduction last fall, but activity halted because it was never heard in the assembly. That changed on Thursday, when the Assembly’s Tourism, Games and Arts Committee unanimously approved the proposed constitutional amendment.
MP Eric Houghtaling, D-Monmouth, said the state had acted cautiously in how it approached college sports when it first approved sports betting, but the idea was still power. see them again.
“Time has proven this to be a very beneficial bill. It went without any problems – or none to our knowledge, ”Houghtaling said. “And I think it was very, very well managed. So we thought the time had come to include college sports in sports betting. And I think it will also be a big boon for the casinos, racetracks and places that are sort of in trouble now.
To be clear, college sports betting is legal in New Jersey, except for games involving New Jersey college teams or played in the state. The latter would prevent betting on the Eastern Region of the 2025 NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament, which is expected to be hosted by Seton Hall University at the Prudential Center in Newark.
Sporting events at state colleges are excluded from sports betting due to concerns about maintaining the integrity of the games.
“We’re going to be monitoring it to make sure ethical standards are not disclosed because the oversight part is important,” said MP Ralph Caputo, D-Essex. “So we’ll see. Let us give the public the opportunity to vote. “
“Obviously this will help the industry,” he said. “But as far as ethical issues, etc., we’ll have to keep an eye on that.”
