Connecticut sportsbook targets NFL season

A lot is happening in the New England area, as Connecticut could be one of the next states to legalize online sports betting. Governor Ned Lamont has supported sports betting within the state, but there has been some closure between tribal nations within the state. Recent updates indicate that Connecticut and the Tribes remain intact to launch sports betting. As states and tribes need more revenue, we’ve seen other states begin to move towards legalized sports betting.

Connecticut 1Connecticut sets the timeline

The start of the NFL season is always a deadline that operators and lawmakers are aiming for. The NFL generates the most revenue, and having everyone registered and ready to go ahead of time can cause year-end earnings to skyrocket. Now, there is still a long way to go for Connecticut to be legalized, but four months is enough for things to be sorted out. New York is set to legalize mobile betting this year, New Jersey is already doing so, and New Hampshire is already in business. Connecticut must move. They and Massachusetts have been slower than expected on legalization.

What we know so far

There is still pressure for more retail casinos in Connecticut as Bridgeport and Hartford land two new locations. This will be a lottery model, where operators will try to win the remaining license. Overall, the state lottery will claim 15 slots. The Mohegan tribe will partner with Kambi and the Mashantucket Pequot tribe will partner with DraftKings. There will also be off-piste betting facilities.

What must happen

There are already offers in place for the Connecticut lottery system and now the state must determine which one they will go with. They were going to factor in pricing, customer retention, retail experience, responsible practices, and the overall product. Regulations have yet to be put in place, but they seem to be getting closer. Once an operator is chosen, things move faster. Over the summer they should see someone get approved and then the operators will kick in to get ready for the start of the NFL season.

While it all seems like a daunting task to get it all done in a matter of months, there is growing optimism that lawmakers and the lottery system are changing as quickly as possible.
