Investigators uncover ‘most extensive gambling operation’ in decades, sheriff says

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an illegal operation on the North Side that uncovered hundreds of illegal slot machines, narcotics, money and a teenager who may be a victim of human trafficking, according to Sheriff Javier Salazar.

The investigation into a building in the 3700 block of Blanco Road has been ongoing for about a week, Salazar said.

Members of the BCSO, Gangs Unit and Organized Crime Unit’s SWAT team searched the property and found more than 100 machines used for illegal gambling, the sheriff said. They also discovered narcotics, hundreds of illegal slot machines out of order, 8-10 guns and a 16-year-old girl who may be a victim of human trafficking.

“It’s the most extensive gaming operation we’ve seen in decades,” said Salazar.

He said MPs were asking the girl questions to determine if she was part of a human trafficking operation taking place in the building.

Salazar said investigators will open all machines, which could take some time.

MPs arrested a dozen people, whom they found hiding in rooms across the building, Salazar said. It is unclear what charges they will face, if any.

Salazar said the BCSO would investigate most of Wednesday night and that it would take time to walk through the 20,000 to 25,000 square foot building.
