Major League Soccer Decision Day solidified the playoffs and decided the Golden Shoe race, and it also marked the end of a legendary career for the league’s most prolific goalscorer.

Chris Wondolowski announced his retirement on Sunday, shortly after his San Jose earthquakes concluded the regular season with a 1-1 draw against FC Dallas. Neither team was linked to the playoffs.

Wondolowski ended his 17-year MLS career with 171 regular season goals, including one in his last game.

“It was an incredible race,” Wondolowski said, fighting back tears as he addressed the fans in San Jose. “I can’t thank you guys enough. “

Prior to decision day, there were three playoff spots in each conference up for grabs.

The New England Revolution had won both the Supporters’ Shield and the Eastern Conference seed with a record 73 points this season. But the Revs lost their last regular season game 1-0 at home to Inter Miami, who had already been knocked out of the playoffs. Blaise Matuidi scored the only goal in the 58th minute.

The Revolution earns a first-round pass as a seed and will face the winner of the first-round playoff game between fourth-seeded NYCFC and fifth-seeded Atlanta.

“That’s definitely the goal,” Revs coach Bruce Arena said of the MLS Cup victory. “It will be a challenge, like every year for each team. And I hope our team will be ready.

The playoffs begin on November 20 following an international break, but the schedule had not yet been released on Sunday night.

NYCFC, undefeated in their last five games, secured their playoff spot with a 1-1 draw with Philadelphia on Sunday. Philadelphia clinched the second seed and will face the seventh seeded Red Bulls in the first round.

NYCFC’s Taty Castellanos also won the league’s Golden Boot award, ending the regular season with 19 goals, including one on Sunday.

Atlanta beat Cincinnati 2-1 to claim the fifth seed and return to the playoffs after missing the game last season. Josef Martinez scored the winner of the match – a volley from a difficult angle – in the 79th minute.

“It feels good. Not just this game. I think this game is probably a testament to the team’s season. The first half of the season was not great, not a lot of points, and then the second half was very good. Thanks again to the players, ”said Atlanta coach Gonzalo Pineda.

Nashville secured a third place in a 1-1 draw against the Red Bulls. Nashville will host Orlando City number 6 in the first round of the playoffs. Orlando blanks Montreal 2-0.

DC United beat Toronto 3-1, but missed out on a playoff berth due to the Nashville draw with the Red Bulls. United’s Ola Kamara scored two goals to tie it at 19 for the season with Castellanos, who won the Golden Shoe tiebreaker with eight assists.

Defending champions Columbus Crew were also knocked out of the playoffs. They beat the Chicago Fire 2-0, but needed the help of other results to get in.

In the Western Conference, the Colorado Rapids rose to the top of the standings with a 5-2 home win over the eliminated LAFC.

After a pass in the first round, the Rapids will face the winner of the first-round game between the fourth-seeded Portland Timbers and fifth-seeded Minnesota United.

The Timbers closed the regular season with a 3-0 home win over expanding Austin FC, while the Loons drew 3-3 with the eliminated LA Galaxy.

The Sounders won the second seed with a 1-1 draw against Vancouver. Seattle will face seventh-seeded Real Salt Lake, who beat third-seeded Sporting Kansas City 1-0 in a must-see game. Sporting face the sixth-seeded Whitecaps.
