Match preview

Saints and Brentford find themselves in the bottom six of the top/bottom goals chart, but there’s still a feeling these two mid-division sides can fill their boots at St Mary’s.

In the bottom half of the actual draw – but looking safe given the chronic state of the bottom four – it’s a free shot for them. Southampton will move Brentford to 11th with a win, while the Bees can move back into the top half.

It’s hard to trust either team, which certainly makes a short-odds Saints bet not easy to advise.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men are on a decent one-from-seven losing streak and will be delighted to have survived Swansea in the FA Cup with ten men.

Brentford left it late to defeat Port Vale and have lost just three of 11 on the road in all competitions.

Only Leicester have conceded more first-half goals than the Bees, while the fast-starting Saints have scored in the top 45 in each of the last nine games in which they have found the net. Support the hosts to score more goals in the first half than in the second.
